The Value of Representing Modal Information

Scientific models provide modal information. But how models represent that information and under what conditions that information has epistemic value is contentious. There are many unresolved questions. How can models represent ostensible non-actual systems? What are the truthmakers of models that provide modal information? Is having a how-possibly explanations sufficient for acquiring understanding of phenomena? Can opaque representations be valuable?
